Filing bankruptcy (either chapter 7 or chapter 13) is a way for individuals with a significant amount of debt, to be relieved of some of it, and be allowed a comfortable time frame in which to pay some of it back. When one successfully files bankruptcy, they are under the protection of the federal bankruptcy court, and will not be bothered by creditors.
